We are proud to announce that three promising art students have been awarded our first ever Create Your Best Work Art Scholarship! Upon meticulously reviewing more than 100 applications, the judging panel named Bailey Wilson, a freshman at Virginia Commonwealth University, as the $5,000 grand prize scholarship winner; along with Aisha Auradou, a sophomore at University of Wyoming, and Sharon Yehnert, a freshman at University of Notre Dame, as the two $2,500 runners-up.

In addition to their scholarships, each student will receive $500 worth of Tombow products to use in the coming academic year, and the art departments of the high schools they graduated from will also receive a $500 package of Tombow products.

We chatted with each of the scholarship recipients to find out more about their passion for art and what this scholarship means to them.

Grand Prize Winner: Bailey Wilson

How did you first get interested in art?

Simply taking elective classes in elementary school made me interested in art. Even as early as first grade, I was staying after school to participate in arts programs.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

My favorite type of art to create is illustration. I love drawing with pen, but I've been really interested in making digital art lately.

How did you first learn about Tombow?

I first learned about Tombow in middle school when I was able to use Tombow art supplies from our classroom.

What is your favorite Tombow product to use when you're creating your art?

My favorite Tombow products to use in my art are probably the Dual Brush Pens or the Lettering Sets. I love the colors available and the high quality feel of them.

How did you feel when you learned that you were selected as the winner of our scholarship?

When I first opened the email, I really couldn't believe that I'd won. I had to reread it multiple times, growing more and more excited with each second. I was overjoyed, and I soon told my family members, all of whom celebrated with me.

What are your career goals or plans for after you graduate?

My career goals for after I graduate are to work as an illustrator or concept artist. I'm also interesting in starting an apprenticeship to become a tattoo artist, and then I would do freelance illustration as well.

Runner-Up: Aisha Auradou

How did you first get interested in art?

My freshman year of high school my teacher, Diane Maclean, convinced me into entering into a state-wide art symposium. While I didn't win any prizes my first year, it got the competitive side of me hooked and I haven't stopped creating art since.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

I strive to create art that makes viewers want to get closer and look deeper into my art. On average people only look at art for 15 seconds and carry on. I don't want me or my art to become an afterthought, and I want people's heads to keep turning when they see it.

How did you first learn about Tombow?

I "borrowed" the Tombow MONO Zero Eraser from my best friend Joshua Gallardo. He later gave it to me because I loved it so much.

What is your favorite Tombow product to use when you're creating your art?

The MONO Zero Eraser my best friend gave me.

How did you feel when you learned that you were selected as a runner-up for our scholarship?

I felt very honored to have gotten so far, money is a struggle for any college student so this scholarship will help me immensely. This contest has further motivated me to create better and better art, and I'm looking forward to further improvement.

What are your career goals or plans for after you graduate?

I want to pursue a Masters in Fine Arts. After that I want to explore my art style and my options and use what I've learned to help beginner artists discover their passion for arts (much like my teachers have done for me).

Runner-Up: Sharon Yehnert

How did you first get interested in art?

I was first introduced to art through my elementary school art class, which I attended two days a week. Once I graduated to middle school, I was fortunate enough to attend a school focused on the visual and performing arts. There, I was able to fill my elective slots with art classes, from drawing and painting to ceramics and sculpture classes. It was in middle school that I discovered a true passion for all forms of art.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

For several years, my favorite type of art to create has been realistic portraiture. However, recently I've come to enjoy watercolor painting just as much. I'd consider both portraiture and watercolors my favorite kinds of art to create.

How did you first learn about Tombow?

I first learned about Tombow while browsing various art stores, and finding Tombow products stocked on the shelves. Later I became more interested and started exploring the company website, which is how I discovered this scholarship.

What is your favorite Tombow product to use when you're creating your art?

My favorite Tombow product to use is the Perfect Blends Dual Brush Pen 20-pack. There's an awesome selection of colors in the pack, and I think the markers themselves work really well, too.

How did you feel when you learned that you were selected as a runner-up for our scholarship?

I was so excited! I didn't think I'd win anything when I first applied, but I loved how the scholarship focused on students pursuing art-related majors. I decided to apply just in case, and I'm so glad I did!

What are your career goals or plans for after you graduate?

After I graduate from college, I hope to go on to pursue a Master's Degree in architecture before entering the work force. Eventually, I want to establish my own architecture firm.

Five additional students will receive product-only awards in the amount of $100. The students receiving those awards are Angelina Dukhonina, a high school senior at Evergreen High School; Anna Louise Brown, a freshman at Eastern Illinois University; Avery Hartranft, a freshman at Kent State University; Kate Goodvin, a high school senior at City High School; and Phoebe Wang, a sophomore at Art Center College of Design.

AAP attacks Central government's decision to award scholarships to Muslims

NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday attacked the decision of the BJP-led Central government to provide scholarships to five crore Muslim students.

"The Muslim scholarship is being publicised by the government with great fanfare. AAP welcomes the fact that the NDA government's attention has been drawn to Muslim students. But the question is why discriminate between students on religious grounds? How is this different from the appeasement politics that the BJP used to accuse the Congress of indulging in?" said AAP leader Sanjay Singh.

Singh said that the "divisive language used by BJP leaders during the election campaign and their behaviour post-election reeks of hypocrisy".The Centre has announced that it will provide scholarships to five crore students belonging to the minority community over the next five years. Union Minister of Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that the government measure was aimed at lowering the dropout rate of girl students of the minority community. The scholarships will be provided through various mediums, including Maulana Azad Education Foundation, which, Naqvi said, will provide 10 lakh scholarships.

"Aam Aadmi Party demands that all students, regardless of the community they belong to, should be given scholarships for education. Such schemes should not be based on religious grounds alone. We all remember the kind of language used by the prime minister, the party and their leaders in the run-up to the elections against minorities in the country. The sharp distinction between then and now is clearly visible to the people of the country," added Singh.

AAP assures lensman's family of justice
The Aam Aadmi Party government, which came under fire for not fulfilling promises made to the family of a photographer who was murdered last year, stated that special prosecutors Rebecca John and Vishal Gossain had been appointed by the government to argue the case.

"We are confident that both lawyers will fight the case strongly on behalf of the state and are hopeful of the strictest possible punishment for the accused. The government is firm in its resolve to ensure the strictest punishment to the accused," said AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj.

Assuring the family of a speedier response from the party and the government in future, Bhardwaj, who also spoke to the photographer's father, Yashpal Saxena, said that "the procedure to disburse the promised compensation of J5 lakh has been expedited. I am committed to being personally available for the family during the process of bringing the accused to justice".

Redshirt sophomore Shane Vallot receives Full Ride scholarship

$

From the very beginning of his time with the university, Billy Napier, the head Football coach for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, approached the Ragin' Cajuns intending to instill the values of a championship winning team into every part of the program.

Recently, Napier has seen significant accomplishments from athletes like senior RB Raymond Calais, senior OL Kevin Dotson, senior OL Robert Hunt, and junior RB Trey Ragas, all of whom have earned spots on Athlon's Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference First Team.

With 15 total selections to Athlon's preseason all-conference team, the Ragin' Cajuns prove that there is much to be excited about in this upcoming season.

Other exciting and honorable news is the special recognition that was granted to Redshirt sophomore OL Shane Vallot for his hard work and dedication to the UL Lafayette Football team.

"This guy has got it done. He's gotten it done in the classroom. He's gotten it done on the field," Napier said, "This guy has worked his way into position on the team."

Napier awarded Vallot with a Full Ride scholarship announcing that he is a well-trusted player who has proven himself valuable to the entire team.

Vallot said via Twitter that receiving this award has been one of his greatest achievements in life.

According to Vallot, Napier strives to teach his team what it means to be successful on and off the field. Vallot's personal philosophy and outlook on life reiterates the values of Napier's crew.

"I'm gonna do what I can to help get this team where they need to be," Vallot said, "Whether I'm starting or on back up, I'm gonna lead them to success."

When he's not on the field for the Ragin' Cajuns, Vallot is a helpful hand for his athletic community serving as a coach for a local baseball team and the Comeaux High School Spartans football team. As a retired Spartan himself, Vallot said he's a natural leader whether he's leading his teammates, or coaching the future generation of athletes.

Most importantly, Vallot hopes to pass on the life lessons he's learned from playing sports for so many years.

Vallot's favorite thing about being a part of Ragin' Cajuns Football is the brotherhood.

"Football brings everyone close. If you didn't have this family bond, you wouldn't have a good team," said Vallot.

One of his greatest drives and inspirations is exactly that: family.

"Family inspires me to work hard. Family and all those that look up to me. Adults, children, even the athletes I coach; I can't let them down," Vallot said.

Although Vallot has received an award of great honor, he said he's not done. He has proven himself as a hardworking individual, but he wants to take it a step further with a specific end goal in mind.

"I want to be the best person," Vallot said, "The best dad, the best leader. Eventually, the best head college football coach ... I'm gonna make a name for myself."

Winning this award has been "an opportunity of a lifetime" for Vallot and although college has been expensive, he said that he now has no worries because he's doing what he loves and couldn't be happier.

His plan for the immediate future is to become a starter and continue to build his reputation at UL Lafayette.

"This is just the beginning," Vallot said.

Scholarship fund created in honor of two Southeast High graduates killed in Peru

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Less than a month ago, two Southeast High School graduates from Manatee County lost their lives on a graduation trip to Peru.

The two were on scooters when a bus hit and killed them. Now, their parents are making efforts to keep their son's memories alive.

On Thursday, both families of the boys set up a scholarship fund in their honor as they prepare to say their final goodbyes this weekend.

This interview was provided to ABC 7 by the Manatee County School District, an interview with Zachary Morris and Alex Ales weeks before their deaths in Peru. Both of them were speaking about their passion and the legacy they'd want to leave behind.

A legacy that will live on through a scholarship fund in their honor. "The scholarship is a beautiful way of carrying their memory forward. The boys spent more time here at school than they did at home for the last four years."

"The understanding that they met and flourished here at Southeast High School and the IB Program having that endowment and having their names live on here is important to us," Albert Ales, father of Alex, said.

$44,000 dollars has already been raised for the scholarship fund, the goal is $250,000 dollars.

As the teen's parents work to keep their son's memory alive. They are still searching for answers that will bring closure to their devastating loss.

"The families would like to thank this good samartian and ask if the boys had any last words that they would have liked him to share with us," a representative spokesman for the families said.

A Celebration of Life ceremony is set for both teens this Saturday at Woodland Community Church on State Road 70 in Bradenton. That service is open to the public.

  • Rachel R. Holt of Huntsville, studying in the master's degree program in adult and lifelong learning in the College of Education and Health Professions.

Donald Judges, vice provost for distance education, congratulated the scholarship recipients in May. The Global Campus first awarded Manning Scholarships for online students in 2018.

"Online education helps students overcome the barriers of time, distance and life demands, and scholarships help lower the cost barrier," Judges said. "This scholarship program began as a heart-felt gesture by co-workers and friends of William E. Manning Jr., a man who was passionate about serving students and continuing his own education."

Co-workers and friends established the W.E. Manning Memorial Scholarship fund soon after Manning died in 1993. The Global Campus added funds to that account in the past three years, making seven scholarships available for the 2019-20 academic year.

At the time of his death, Manning was studying in a U of A doctoral program and managing independent study programs, a forerunner of today's Self-Paced Online Courses. The U of A awarded a posthumous degree of Doctor of Education in adult education to Manning in May 2018.

Scholarship recipients

Caitlin Bennett, 24, completed her bachelor's degree in elementary education in 2017 and then began the online master's program in educational leadership. She said her ability to stay organized, manage her time, and balance academics and activities has served her well. She is looking forward to her final year in the program and completing her administrative internship beginning in the fall.

"This determination I have had over the years to do things without being told and to do them well has served me well in my pursuit of my master's online," Bennett said. "No one is there really telling me to pay attention in class or to do the readings, but I do because I care about my career and I love to learn."

Bennett, a member of Phi Mu Fraternity, volunteered at the Action Center Literacy Program, the Boys and Girls Club, and U of A Make a Difference Day during her time on campus as an undergraduate. She hopes to one day continue to bring about this idea of volunteering and service in her school.

Caleb J. Findley, 31, a member of the Arkansas Air National Guard since 2008, said he did not know how to study or manage his time in 2006, when he started college with a scholarship. He lost his scholarship, joined the U.S. Air Force, and was deployed in Afghanistan in 2012.

"While there, I saw a lot of scary stuff and was part of some very intense situations, but I managed to make it through that deployment with my life," Findley said. "I distinctly remember sitting in a bunker after a mortar attack, thinking, 'Where would I be if I had taken college more seriously?'"

When he returned to the states, he entered the Air Force geospatial intelligence analyst school and learned productive study habits. Today, Findley is enrolled at the U of A and plans to finish his bachelor's degree in communication in December 2019.

"I've worked 40 hours a week and maintained a 3.4 grade point average," Findley said. "It hasn't been easy, but it's been fulfilling. It's been three years of giving up weekends, but I appreciate being able to do it."

Rachel R. Holt, 29, is pursuing master's degrees in adult and lifelong learning and secondary education to help her gain future employment that will support her family and provide health care for her husband, a disabled combat veteran who served in Operation Enduring Freedom.

"Through my own education I plan to enhance the world by educating others," Holt said. "It is my fiercest belief that education is the foundation on which all impactful innovations are constructed. I also unshakably believe that education is the avenue through which we can right societal wrongs and equalize the disparities that unduly disenfranchise one while enabling another."

Holt said her career goals are to work as a high school English teacher and, later, to work as a public school administrator.

Fletcher T. Ryan, 25, an engineer and second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, said, "The U of A was an excellent opportunity for me. It's online, it's reputable, and it's cost effective."

While building his engineering skills through formal education, he boosted his interpersonal skills - compassion, understanding and investing in causes beyond himself - as a long-time health care volunteer.

"Volunteering is a large part of my life, and I have learned so much about people and about myself - things a formal education may not have been able to give me," Ryan said. "Recently, I have started volunteering as a patient care ambassador, where I visit with patients and help transport them to appointments, assist staff, and help visitors navigate the hospital. ... I have learned to be a better person because of it."

Ryan said he feels connected with Manning, for whom the scholarship is named, because they share a passion for lifelong learning.

"It has been about giving the time I have and growing from my experiences with volunteering," he said. "I feel I reflect some of the values (Manning) had. I was stoked when I found out I got the scholarship."

Bushra Salamah, 26, is a registered nurse working in the emergency department at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

"I've been an ER nurse for about three years," Salamah said. "Within a year, I knew I wanted to go back to school to get a DNP. I want to be there more for my patients."

Salamah said RNs help patients follow doctors' orders, but nurses who earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice can participate in the care plan for patients and help patients make medical decisions.

"DNPs have a stronger rapport with patients," she said.

Salamah, the first person in her family to earn a bachelor's degree, said she must balance work and study because she is the sole financial provider for herself and her fiancé, who is a medical student.

"(The scholarship) will help me so I do not have to work so much, so that I can focus more on my studies," she said. "I genuinely enjoy working and challenging myself academically to increase my knowledge base."

John M. Seidel, 39, is the father of five adopted children and the guardian of three foster children. He spent the last nine years teaching in a classroom, and now he is studying in the educational leadership program to qualify for a future educational administrative role.

"I would love to be a principal down the road," he said. "I have some visions for public schools beyond the current curriculum. I would love to embed career objectives into a math class, just using real-world skills in the classroom."

He is teaching math at Lincoln Junior High School in Bentonville, but he has applied for an assistant principal position.

"I teach skills that students need in order to have a better quality of life," Seidel said. "Mathematics is one skill, but deeper imbedded is hidden curriculum and soft skills including problem solving, critical thinking, goal setting, and a sense of confidence."

Seidel's parents never attended college and struggled financially. He said he has been able to break that cycle by investing in education.

"While I'm grateful for the childhood my parents gave me and have no regrets because they worked tirelessly for me and my 11 siblings, education gave me perspective and the opportunity to live a better life," Seidel said. "Through the EDLE grad program at the University of Arkansas, I've learned I can help more than just myself.

"The scholarship is helping to relieve the financial burden I would have had otherwise," Seidel said.

Sommer Yount, 21, who began her nursing career in November 2018 as a registered nurse, is completing her bachelor's degree online to enhance her ability to care for patients.

"As a nurse, I took an oath to ensure the safety of my patients and to make sure that they receive the best care possible," Yount said. "This is why I want to continue my education by getting my B.S.N. from the University of Arkansas. I want to not only grow my educational background, but I also want to learn more about the health care needs of the patients that I serve in my community.

"(The scholarship) really means a lot," Yount said. "It's helping me work a full-time job and go back to school sooner than expected."

Yount does not plan to stop once she earns a bachelor's degree.

"My dream is to continue my education online with the U of A to get my master's in nursing," Yount said. "This would allow me to switch from the clinical area to the classroom, allowing me to teach future nurses the skills they need to serve their patients physically, spiritually and mentally."
