Scholarship created in honor of George Boldt

WATERTOWN - To honor the memory of George C. Boldt - whose story is well-known in the north country and whose castle on Heart Island is a long-established tourist attraction - his great-grandson, Malcolm Goodridge, announced Wednesday he would match all charitable gifts, up to $50,000, to help create a scholarship for high school students. The idea came from a family gathering last summer at Boldt Castle, near Alexandria Bay, where Mr. Goodridge and other Boldt descendants decided to move forward with the concept to benefit local students.Administered by the Northern New York Community Foundation, the George C. Boldt Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Jefferson County high school senior planning to attend a two- or four-year college, trade or technical school. Academics, as well as community service, will be considered. The award will be presented on Heart Island.A frequent vacationer in the region, Mr. Boldt set out to build a castle for his wife, Louise, the grand home now known as Boldt Castle. When Mrs. Boldt died, Mr. Boldt halted work on the castle, dying later, legend has it, of a broken heart. Now managed by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority, the castle has been rehabilitated, showcasing his original vision."Establishing a scholarship fund locally seemed to be a fitting tribute, as well an extension of the Boldt family's mission to support higher education," Mr. Goodridge said.To help establish the scholarship, matching donations can be made to the Northern New York Community Foundation at 131 Washington St. or online at www.nnycf.org, with a notation for the George C. Boldt Scholarship. While all donors will be recognized locally, a donation of $1,000 or more will be acknowledged on a permanent plaque at Boldt Castle and individuals giving $5,000 or more will be listed as a founding donor. The gist of itn WHO: The great-grandson of George C. Boldt, original builder of Boldt Castle, is trying to establish a scholarship in Mr. Boldt's name.n WHAT: The scholarship will benefit high school students in the region, with a plan to attend a two- or four-year college, trade or technical school.
