KENT - The Kent Chamber of Commerce recently announced the winner of its fifth scholarship, chosen from an impressive field of young people - Trisha Worthington of Kent.
Worthington will begin her second year at Worcester Polytechnic Institute this fall where she is majoring in Environmental Engineering. She was named to the dean list's in her second semester of the 2017-2018 academic year.
As per the scholarship guidelines, each applicant had to be a member of the Kent Chamber of Commerce, an employee of a chamber business or an immediate family member of either. Worthington's mother, Lynn Mellis Worthington, works for South Kent School and is an officer on the Kent Historical Society's board of directors.
Worthington has done volunteer work for the Kent Historical Society as well as the Northwest CT Council. Both South Kent School and the Kent Historical Society are long-time members of the Kent Chamber of Commerce.
Sje has an excellent academic record not only in college but in her high school years as well. She was in the National Honor Society in her senior year of high school and was on the High Honor Roll in grades 10, 11 and 12. In high school her extracurricular activities included tennis (Most Improved Player in grade 11) and Jazz Band (Most Valuable Player and the Eric Whitacre Composing Award in grade 12). In college she has participated in the Democrats Club and Green Team, a club dedicated to promoting sustainability. She has worked seasonally at Paley's Farm Market in Sharon.
Sge has always been hard working, organized and positive in her life and schoolwork. From her various jobs whether they are paid or volunteer she has learned problem-solving and money management. Volunteering makes her feel a part of the community. She is also learning to stay calm during difficult times and looking on the bright side of situations.
The Scholarship Committee, consisting of Peter D'Aprile, Paul Tines and Richard Lindsey, was hard-pressed to make a selection as all applicants had excellent credentials including solid grades and extracurricular activities that ranged from sports to charitable organizations and part time jobs. They noted that these are the young people who don't make the 6 o'clock news and who give hope for the future. Each applicant was asked to list three words to describe him or herself and then write one sentence explaining why that word was selected. Worthington describes herself as diligent, organized and positive.
Funds for the scholarship come from a portion of the net proceeds from various events sponsored by the Kent Chamber of Commerce, including the Kent Pumpkin Run and the Kent Champagne Stroll.
