Jaclyn Mariano has been Miss Asian Global, Miss Asian American and Miss Asian Community Service.
The daughter of the late Master Sgt. Jude Mariano won't be wearing a crown the morning of June 14. More likely a golf cap.
Mariano's hosting "three hours of golf" at Top Golf in Roseville, hoping to raise money for college scholarships to other members of a "Gold Star" family.
Though a 9 a.m. to noon event in Roseville may not be ideal for Mariano's extended Vallejo family and friends - "Very inconvenient," she said laughing. "Lesson learned." - Mariano hopes at least 60 supporters contribute the $60 entry fee that includes a breakfast buffet.
Jude Mariano died in Doha, Qatar, Feb. 10, 2004. He was 39. Jaclyn was 13 at the time.
Understanding what it's like to lose a parent to a military conflict, "it's good to help other families out," Mariano said. "I wanted to start this scholarship in honor of my dad."
Jaclyn has been involved in many community activities. Coordinating a fund-raising golf outing is a first.
"I'm new to this," she said by phone Thursday. "I want it to be an annual event. One day I hope to have my own nonprofit."
She said she is getting support from Travis Air Force where her father was stationed.
"They offered to help me out," she said.
It's not as if Jaclyn's oblivious to the rules of golf. She was on the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School golf team in school.
"I only joined because my dad loved golf. I still have his clubs," she said.
The Gold Star family benefit golf and breakfast is Friday, June 14, 9 a.m. to noon, at Top Golf, 1700 Freedom Way, Roseville. Entry $60 includes golf and breakfast. Breakfast only $50. To purchase tickets: Jaclyn Mariano, jamariano13@gmail.com or MSgt. Shawn Strickland, shawn.strickland82@gmail.com.
