Capitals center Lars Eller announced Tuesday that he has was starting a scholarship for children in his hometown of Rødovre.
"As a way to give back to my roots, I'm proud to announce the Lars Eller Legatet," Eller said in an Instagram post. "A scholarship especially designated to help the [underprivileged] kids in my hometown club of Rødovre, Denmark. I believe all children, no matter the income status of their family, deserve a chance to find happiness, community, and personal satisfaction through ice hockey. Just as I was lucky enough to do."
Like Capitals prospect Nathan Walker, Eller is an inspirational figure in his home country, holding the distinction as the only Dane in NHL history to ever win the Stanley Cup. Last summer, Eller brought the NHL's championship trophy to Rødovre and participated in a parade. He also took the Cup to his childhood rink.
Eller scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal in Game Five of the 2018 Stanley Cup Final. He signed a five-year extension during the 2017-18 regular season.
