
HICKORY - "CLASSOF80" Alumni Foundation along with co-sponsor, Geovanny Membreno- owner of La'Rumba /EZ CARS of Hickory, recently hosted a reception to recognize the 2019 scholarship recipients, with $500 scholarships each.
The foundation members are proud to be a product of the Ridgeview community and understand the significance of giving back by providing financial support, mentoring, and setting positive examples for the community at large.
"We truly understand and demonstrate, the meaning of the African proverb, 'Its Takes a Village' as we live out our motto 'Still Together... and Stronger than Ever,'" said Felicia Culbreath-Setzer, scholarship chair.
This event was held at the Ridgeview Library Museum (refurbished and maintained by Interfaith Housing of Hickory) and welcomed three young men into the Circle of Excellence.
All are 2018 graduates of Hickory High School.
Jamar Brown, son of Cashawnda Hird, attends Western Carolina University, majoring in business administration. He loves Cullowhee and the Catamount family.
James Williams, son of Tiwan Williams, attends Livingstone College, majoring in business administration/minor in music. He is on the drumline in the marching band and is a member of the Varick Youth Council.
Kobe Wilson, son of Andre and Janice Wilson, attends Winston-Salem State University, majoring in exercise science. He is currently on the dean's list, 3.4 GPA, and a member of the E.M.E.R.G.E. (Establishing Mindsets and Experiences Representing Growth towards Excellence) Leadership program.
"CLASSOF80" Alumni Foundation seeks to recognize the talents/ potential of minority students, and their community involvement as they pursue a higher education. The foundation has been providing scholarships to the community since 1985. President is Shannon Brooks Jones. Vice president is Gregory E. Johnson.
