TOPEKA, Kan. - Rachel Zimpfer of Inman was awarded the Fix Scholarship from Washburn University for the 2019-2020 school year.
The Fix Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship awarded by the Washburn University College of Arts and Sciences to incoming high school students who have earned a strong ACT score and have an interest in studying the natural sciences. Fourteen students received a Fix Scholarship.
The courses of study that quality for the Fix Scholarship are:
- Biology, including: Biology, Biochemistry, Environmental Biology or Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.
- Chemistry, including: Chemistry or Biochemistry.
- Forensics Science programs, including: Digital Forensics, Forensic Chemical Science.
- Physics
- Preparatory programs: Pre-Engineering, Pre-Med, Pre-Pharmacy or Pre-Vet.
The scholarship is named for Mary N. Fix, a Topeka native born in 1926, who graduated with a chemistry degree in 1949 and had a distinguished career as a research physicist. Despite being discouraged from studying the sciences because of her gender, Fix was able to attend Washburn thanks to a four-year scholarship she received, so it is fitting her legacy at Washburn supports others with an irrepressible passion for science.
