A special scholarship has been founded to honor the memory of Marblehead sailor Daniel Sullivan. For its inaugural year, the Dan Sullivan Learn to Sail Scholarship Fund is offering ages 6 to 8 the opportunity to participate in the Boston Yacht Club's Learn to Sail junior sailing class from Aug. 5 to 22 (session 3).

The goal of the Dan Sullivan Learn to Sail Scholarship Fund is to provide access to sailing programs to participants who otherwise are unable to afford the program. To qualify for the scholarship, the applicant must have completed first grade, currently live on the North Shore and be keen to learn.

"We are honored that we can offer a scholarship to a deserving young sailor and look forward to having them participate in the Junior Sailing program," Commodore Jenny Aspinall said. "We know Dan started his sailing career as a youngster, as have many of us involved in sailing today. It is an invaluable opportunity that we are pleased to offer to the community."

Dan Sullivan benefited from learning to sail as a youth and was given his first boat as a child, which turned into a lifelong love of the sea. In addition, he was one of the longest active members in the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead. Sullivan took his children and grandchildren out sailing all the time, inspiring his friends and family to set up this scholarship in his memory.

To apply, please print and fill out the application at http://bit.ly/sullivan19 and return to: Junior Sailing, Boston Yacht Club, 1 Front St., Marblehead, MA 01945. Applications are due June 1.
