Seniors Nominated for Prestigious Postgraduate Scholarship
Story Links BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Rebel seniors Caroline Adams from Ole Miss Volleyball and Beau Briggs of Ole Miss Men's Golf have been nominated for the Boyd H. McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by the University of Mississippi and announced by the league Tuesday.
The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes.
Each year, the SEC, in conjunction with AT&T, an SEC official sponsor, provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $15,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $7,500 post-graduate scholarship.
The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are honored at the SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, Florida, in early June.
Each would become the sixth Rebel to win the award, and the first since fellow Rebel golfer Forrest Gamble won in 2016.
Briggs, a Covington, Louisiana, native was tabbed a Cleveland/Srixon All-America Scholar last season, as well as CoSIDA Academic All-District. He has also been named to the Spring SEC Academic Honor Roll the past two years.
Briggs has been named to the Chancellor's Honor Roll at Ole Miss six times, all while retaining a 3.89 GPA. He was also a member of the 2018 SEC Community Service Team.
In high school, Briggs was one of 12 players in the nation named an HP Scholastic Junior All-American by the American Junior Golf Association.
During his senior campaign, Briggs is leading the team in stroke average (71.82) and top-10 finishes (3). He fired a career-low 205 (-11) at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, placing fourth, while tying for third at the Intercollegiate at The Grove. Yesterday, the senior shot a personal-best 66 (-6) to pace Ole Miss on day one of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship.
Adams, another Louisiana product, hailing from Lafayette, was a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection this past fall, as well as a 2017 SEC Community Service Team selection and four-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member.
Adams has been on the Chancellor's Honor Roll (perfect 4.0 GPA) all four years, and ranks second all-time in program history with 1,454 digs. She also holds the single season record for digs, set during her junior year with 522.
Adams graduated this past December with a degree in communication disorders, with plans to attend graduate school to study audiology.
