PROVIDENCE - Dennis Littky, president of College Unbound, and philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein have created the Feinstein Senior Scholars program, an initiative to help parents of Feinstein Junior Scholars return to college.
Qualified parents will receive scholarships to help enable them to enroll at College Unbound and complete their college degrees.
"We are honored that Rhode Island's leading educational philanthropist has chosen to work with College Unbound to increase adult college degree completion in our state. By doing so, we're helping to raise the economic and career prospects of the nearly 120,000 adults in Rhode Island who started but never completed college. Further, these adult learners will set a remarkable example to their children and older students everywhere," said Littky.
"Education has always been the key to success, no matter your age," said Littky. "Our mission is to help adults complete their degrees. With the support of this great philanthropist, we will make Rhode Island a national example of excellence, helping scores of adults achieve this goal."
"What a wonderful opportunity for our Junior Scholars' parents who started but never completed college to be able to do that now," Feinstein said. "I am so glad to be a part of it."
For nearly 30 years, Feinstein has awarded millions of dollars in scholarships to nearly 250,000 students across the state to help them meet their tuition costs. The Feinstein Senior Scholar program is intended to complement this work by supporting adult students to complete their college degrees.
College Unbound became Rhode Island's 13th college in May 2015, and was recently approved for federal financial aid - including student loans and Pell grants - for eligible students.
