Rivers Casino demonstrated their commitment in serving communities in education. On Friday, March 22nd, Devin Maddox the Vice President and General Counsel Chair of the Charitable Foundation from Rivers Casino in Des Plaines brought a scholarship check for seniors graduating Bloom high School in Chicago Heights.
"I received a letter from Ms. Elizabeth Fushi-Peterson.Fushi identifying the need that the students have at Bloom high school" begins Maddox. "Many of the students going on to college at Bloom are first generation. Children that are capable to go to college but don't have the financial needs these funds help. Rivers Casino is committed to providing the dollars for students in Illinois."
According to Bloom High school Guidance counselor Elizabeth Fushi- Peterson, The scholarship will provide for the class of 2019, two five thousand dollar scholarships, two twenty five hundred dollar scholarships and five one thousand dollar scholarships. The student has to have a GPA of 3.0 and above as well as what they've done serving in the community" explains Fushi-Peeterson.
Students not attending a college or University but attending a tech school and has a GPA of 2.5 and above will also get a change in receiving a scholarship. Students attending a cosmetology school or automotive school will get an opportunity as well. The students also have to write an essay on what inspires you and what they choose to do in their future.
This year is the 119th graduation ceremony for Bloom High School. The high school is an art deco historic landmark featuring six fresco murals created in 1935 by Edgar Britton. According to River Gives website, they not only give hundreds of thousands of dollars but employees donate thousands of volunteer hours.
"Rivers Casino also gives to other organizations that assists children in communities that need some help" said Maddox. "When we received the letter from Bloom High School we discussed that the kids were worthy of granting the scholarship funds. It is who we are at Rivers Casino. We're always looking to make our communities in Illinois a better place."
Guidance counselor Fushi-Peterson explains that the scholarships given by Rivers Casino assists a few of the Bloom students.
"We're also going to look into giving the lower scholarships to students going to tech schools" Fushi-Peterson said. "We service a low-income community and our kids go off to college and do amazing things every year. It's a struggle, our students have to look at the price tag, they have to find out how much their getting from financial aid. There is a fallacy that all these students get 100% financial aid, that is not true. They're not getting full rides."
Dr. Lenell Navarre, Superintendent for Bloom Township District 206, along with Elizabeth Fushi-Peterson accepted the check from Rivers Casino. "This is a great day" explains Dr. Navarre. "For some of our students this funding will be able to assist them with college expenses. I want to thank Rivers Casino for this generous donation."
