Applications for the Hazleton Rotary Memorial Scholarship are now available in the guidance counselor offices for seniors in public or private high schools located within the geographic boundaries of the Hazleton Area School District.

"We are absolutely delighted to announce that this year we will, once again, be able to provide a scholarship to three different students," said Kathie Oh, Hazleton Rotary president. "This is the fifth time that we have been able to do so.

"The Rotary Club always looks forward to helping members of the Greater Hazleton community, especially our young people and their families. Our Rotary Club members work very hard at fundraisers to earn the money for our various service projects, such as this annual scholarship opportunity."

"We are proud to announce that the Rotary Club scholarships for 2019 have been raised to $2,000 and $1,250 per year, respectively, for four-year totals of $8,000 for one recipient and $5,000 for the other two recipients," added Dr. John Madden, project chairman.

The recipient student must remain in college and maintain a grade-point average of at least 2.75. The recipient student must provide a transcript at the end of each academic year to the chairman of the scholarship committee to keep the scholarship in effect.

Eligibility requirements:

■ Each applicant must intend to pursue studies at an accredited postsecondary institution.

■ During the course of the scholarship, the student will attend at least one meeting of the Hazleton Rotary Club each year to give a report and reflect on their academic career.

■ Dependents of members of the Rotary Club of Hazleton are not eligible.

The Hazleton Rotary Memorial Scholarship is designed to provide education scholarships to assist eligible individuals in pursuing his or her undergraduate education.

The selection of the three scholarship recipients shall be based on the following objectives:

■ Prior academic performance

■ Community and school service and work

■ An essay outlining how volunteering makes a difference

■ One letter of recommendation from a teacher, administrator, guidance counselor or from a responsible community person

Each applicant will be required to submit a completed application, essay, transcript of grades and a letter of recommendation to the school guidance counselor on or before April 27.

"This is really a fantastic opportunity for any area senior," said Madden. "We are very pleased that we can offer this assistance to our local high school students and we encourage those who are eligible to pick up the application in the guidance counselors office today."
