Meanwhile, the Oregon Farm Bureau invites all photography enthusiasts to enter their best images of Oregon agriculture in the annual OFB Calendar Contest.

Twelve selected photographers will have their work featured as month images in the 2020 Oregon's Bounty Calendar.

The award-winning calendar celebrates all aspects of Oregon agriculture: the products, the people, the production, the landscape, the enjoyment, anything that depicts the beauty, technology, culture, enjoyment, or tradition of family farming and ranching.

"Spring is a fantastic time to look for photo opportunities within Oregon agriculture," said OFB Communications Director Anne Marie Moss. "Farmers markets are in full swing, fields are blooming, farmers are preparing for summer harvest, and young farm animals abound."

Horizontal-format, high-resolution images - both close-ups and panoramic views - are needed of all types of agriculture in all seasons.

Subject ideas include scenes from farmers markets, close-ups of ag products or crops in the field, planting and harvesting crops, panoramic scenes of farmland, people enjoying Oregon-grown ag products, portraits of farmers/ranchers/families, farm animals, state or county fairs, 4-H and FFA events, on-farm festivals, to name just a few.

Photographers with images selected for month pages in Oregon's Bounty will receive a photo credit in the 2020 calendar, which is mailed to 67,000 Farm Bureau members, and copies of the calendar. Everyone who submits an image will receive a complimentary copy of the calendar ($20 value), provided they include their mailing address.

The deadline for entries is Sept. 15, 2019.

Photographers do not need to be Farm Bureau members to participate and there is no limit to the number of photos that can be submitted.

Photo specifications and contest rules are attached and are at www.oregonfb.org/calendar.

The state's largest general farm organization, Oregon Farm Bureau is a grassroots, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization representing the interests of the state's family farmers and ranchers in the public and policymaking arenas. Based on his heavy involvement with FFA's small engines and welding classes, South Newton senior Ethan Grigsby was awarded a $5,500 scholarship for a 75-week hands-on training program at Universal Technical Institute in Lisle, IL.

The training will be in auto and diesel mechanics, and at the conclusion of the 75-week program, Grigsby will be able to choose a specialty from a number of different auto mechanic brands to be certified in.

"What we saw in Ethan, is that he is an extremely hard worker," said Andy Brasher, admissions representative. "He not only works hard in school, but he is active in FFA competitions and also works a full-time job. He has a great head on his shoulders and will do really great with us."

Ethan wasn't expecting that much in scholarship money but said he is excited to begin his training and he wants to work in a dealership someday in a mechanic related field.

"The auto and diesel industry are begging for young people to get into this field," added Brasher. Students are being offered a number of different incentives to get them into certified programs, and we have a good relationship with a number of these companies."

Universal Technical Institute is the largest provider of technical education training for students in the US. Students who attend UTI technical training programs have the ability to earn certifications with more than 30 OEM manufacturers, such as Ford, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Cummins, and Harley-Davidson.

"I liked the campus and the nice, clean facility," said Grigsby about UTI. "The teachers are very knowledgeable about this industry and I will get a lot more hands-on training there.

For more information about the school and or its training program, contact Brasher at 219-688-8242 or via email at abrasher@uti.edu.

I'm a senior with football recruiting interest but no scholarship offers. What do I do? - Recruiting-101

$

0

Just as a quick note before I start on this article. When I do articles like this, and I have done them at various times during the year, I am not just cut and pasting the previous article. I am updating the situation for potential football recruits throughout the country. For example, one written in May would talk about getting calls and setting up camps. Because it is now mid July, what is talked about in this football recruiting article will be much different. There may be some similar themes but that is because I want to make sure recruits are following the path that I think will help them in their battle for a scholarship.

So for those seniors to be, if you had heeded the advice of this site, you may have already had a chance to get to a number of one day camps. The difference in the one day vs. a three day camp is saving your parents a lot of money. And if you are rich enough to not worry about money, then what difference is it if you receive a scholarship or not?

Because the college coaches cannot legally call you until September, what you need to be doing as a recruit is picking up the phone and calling the schools that you camped at. Yes, these coaches are busy with preparation for the upcoming season but what you are looking for is a true evaluation. Also using social media is a great way to touch base if you have messaged or DMed with them previously.

How can I help support Recruiting-101?

Please note that I expect the coaches to sugar coat things a little bit. For example, I don't think they are going to tell you that you are terrible and need to quit playing football. If they really like you, why haven't they offered you a scholarship? So take what they say with a grain of salt.

You don't need to flat out ask them about a scholarship offer but the two things that you want to request is an evaluation of your abilities and what areas you can improve on in the future. The evaluation could give you a better feel for the level that you can play. It might not be at that school but there are plenty of schools out there. And for areas of improvement, remember that this coach is earning a full time living coaching football. I would hope he knows what he is doing.

After you have received your evaluations back from the coaches, now is a good time to really reflect on where you are at as a potential recruit. There are still a few camps left during the July months but normally not all that many. So what you should look at with your family is what the coaches said, how much serious mail/social media contact you have been receiving, and the coaches that have been calling you.

If you are happy with the attention that you are getting and feel good about what the coaches have said to you, now is a good time to look more into these schools. Your highlight video should be online and easily accessible. This can be done via hudl or youtube but the key is making it easily searchable on google and the links readily available when sending out to coaches.

You can also start looking into setting up visits to the schools that you have not seen. While State University may be the dream, you can also look into the Division I-AA and II schools that have been showing you interest. The fact that you are trying to visit their campus shows you are interested. Keep in mind that the campus during the summer vs. during the school year may be a lot different. Do these visits only if you hope to decide soon. Otherwise going to a game during the fall could give you a better feel of the atmosphere and what the school is like when students are on campus.

If you have looked at the recruiting interest you have received and feel you were shooting for too high of a level, now is a good time to open things up and start looking at more schools. I really hope that you followed the advice of keeping all of your options open and filling out all of the questionnaires. If you did that, it will help you at this time.

What I think you should do is take a look back at the Five Steps to a Scholarship Offer. If you have already gone through these steps before, the place you should look into now once again is step number two. You want to be able tofind schools that match you. This time, broaden your horizons and look at different schools. Consider programs at all levels and just do what you can to look at different options.

If you haven't gone through the Five Steps to a Scholarship Offer, the place that I would recommend starting is step number one.Building this athletic recruiting profile helps because it is similar to a job resume. You want the college coaches to know that you are interested in their school and this profile shows that you have some ability in your sport.

After you have built that, go into step two and three. These will help you find the schools that you are looking for and then market yourself to the coaches. Regarding a highlight video, if you can find one done well and cheap, get it done. If not, it may be worth it to wait until after the first few games of the senior season.

The football recruiting process is definitely a journey that is not easy. Keep that in mind before getting discouraged with scholarships and offers from college coaches.

Hoover High School Class of 2019 receives $47 million in scholarship offers

Hoover High School said goodbye to 719 graduates in its Class of 2019 Thursday night in a ceremony at Bartow Arena at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

That's more students than 230 public high schools in Alabama have in their entire school and is believed to be the largest graduating high school class in the state.

"Graduating from the largest and most diverse high school in Alabama has tremendous benefits," Principal John Montgomery told the graduation crowd Thursday night.

"Our students are taught to independently navigate new experiences," Montgomery said. "They celebrate and seek diversity, and they take advantage of opportunities before them to reach and exceed their individual goals and visions for the future."

Even though Hoover's senior class is large, 98 percent of them qualified to graduate, according to the school's college and career specialist, Cindy Bond.

And more than 45 percent of them were offered academic, athletic or talent-based scholarships to attend college, Montgomery said.

The total amount of scholarships offered to Hoover's Class of 2019 was more than $47 million, a record for the school, he said. The amount of scholarships actually accepted was more than $16 million, Bond said.

The seniors were accepted to more than 220 colleges and universities across the country and even internationally, but many of them are continuing their education inside the state, Montgomery said.

At least 11 are enlisting in the military, including one accepted into the United States Military Academy, one going to the Merchant Marine Academy and one on a full Air Force ROTC scholarship, Bond said.

Others have secured employment by going through specialized training and earning industry credentials, Montgomery said.

"Regardless of the path they take after graduation, every graduate will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers for success in the future," he said.

Twenty percent of the senior class - 141 students - earned a GPA of 4.0 or higher, and three seniors - Will Couch, Debbie Fu and Emily Hagood - earned the highest possible score of 36 on the ACT college entrance exam, Bond said.

Hoover's Class of 2019 had seven National Merit Finalists: Couch, Hagood, George Chen, Shehzan Maredia, Anna Muthalaly, Abhinav Venkatesan and Ronald Yuan, and three members of the class (Couch, Hagood and Yuan) are candidates to become a U.S. Presidential Scholar.

This group of seniors has been involved in 18 state championships and won numerous local, regional and national competitions in academics and fine and performing arts, Montgomery said.

"Our world is ever-changing, and we need these bright, creative and open-minded graduates to help us adjust, learn and thrive," Montgomery said of Hoover's Class of 2019. "I am confident that the Class of 2019 is prepared for the changes and challenges ahead and will utilize many of the lessons learned at Hoover High School to create effective change for the future."

Change is inevitable, but the attitudes and perspectives with which we react to change will determine the final outcome, he said. "The world needs your ideas, your compassion and your willingness to stand up and fight for what you believe in."

Allie Couch, the Class of 2019's senior class president, said the world measures success by GPAs, ACT scores and the number of trophies or state championships won.

"But all those numbers will fade, and we will remember high school by something a little different," Couch said. "By the laughs we shared, the people we connected with, the quality of friendships made and the things we learned that will help us all go out and change the world, and most of all by the memories made at Hoover High School that will be with us for the rest of our lives. I hope that you will continue to live a life measured by things other than numbers."

Hoover's Class of 2019 had 30 students qualify as valedictorians this year, and three of them spoke at graduation.

Preeti Venkatesan, one of them, said her four years at Hoover High taught her the importance of friendship.

"High school brought me some of the most important people in my life - friends who were there through the tears and the laughs, through the late nights and the early mornings and in sickness and in health," she said. "These people are the family that I chose, and we will always be connected no matter how far apart we are."

They shared a lot of memories together, including long detours to get to the front office, year-round construction on Alabama 150, a new bell system that sounds like an airport, C hall stairwell traffic jams, and athletic and academic championships, Venkatesan said.

Quoting Jon Bon Jovi, she said that nothing is as important as passion.

"No matter what you want to do with your life, be passionate. Mediocrity is nobody's goal, and perfection shouldn't be either," Venkatesan said. "We'll never be perfect, but remember .... passion plus persistence equals possibilities."

Lawson Shaw, another valedictorian, said they are all about to enter a tumultuous transition time in their lives in which they will have to be independent, find their self-identity and maybe even cook their own food.

They may come to realize that what they once wanted to be in life is no longer the right path for them, and that's OK, he said.

"We don't have to have all the answers right now. We don't have to know everything," Shaw said. "This is not the time to make hard and fast decisions. Whose idea was it anyway for us to make permanent choices in the midst of our teenage hormones?

"This is a time to grow, mature and learn. This is a time to have fun, live carefree and absolutely adore life," he said. "This is the time to enjoy every moment we have left without the responsibilities of adulthood. This is the time to cherish every single day."

He advised his fellow graduates to make mistakes, change their minds multiple times and not be afraid of the uncertainties of the future.

"Instead, seize the endless opportunities ahead," Shaw said. "Let go of the desire to know and control the outcome of everything. Trust the process, trust your intuition and most importantly, trust yourself."

Hagood, another valedictorian, said that when she was 4, she wanted to be a gypsy. When she was in middle school, she wanted to be a forensic scientist, and then later she wanted to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. Now, she wants to be a materials engineer.

But Hagood said she actually hates the question: "What do you want to be when you grow up" because a job title doesn't define who you are, what you believe or what makes a life worth living.

"I urge everyone in this room to instead ask, 'What problems do you want to solve?' Hagood said. "What kind of difference do you want to make?"

Some people might want to ensure that all people have access to clean air and clean water, while others might want to develop cutting-edge medical technology, educate future leaders or provide reliable electricity to their community, she said.

"Whatever problems you want to solve, go for it with a solution-oriented, service-based mindset," Hagood said. "We, the class of 2019, will change the world. ... Let us commit to work hard, to be kind and compassionate to people who are like us and to people who are not and to share with the world all that we have learned as students at Hoover High."

Other valedictorians were Lorenzo Addy, Jessica Bradley, Jacqueline Chavez Ochoa, Elise Collins, Will Couch, Samuel Eudy, Debbie Fu, Andrew Gerderman, Manish Gorre, Alanna Hauer, Abhishek Kamath, Christian Lam, Pippa Lother, Shehzan Maredia, Zoya Mulji, Anna Muthalaly, Ravikiran Nataraj, Christian Pegouske, Katelyn Ragland, Aahil Rajpari, Margaret Rayfield, Lucinda Sherrod, Kristin Simanyi, Abhinav Venkatesan, Abigail Williamson, Eshita Yadav and Ronald Yuan.

The Oregon Head Start Association is proud to announce our scholarship recipients for 2019. The applicants had amazing stories that made selecting the winners difficult for the committee. We commend all of our applicants for sharing their stories and pursuing higher education!

Many of our recipients this year chose to share their essays on our website! Thank you for allowing us to share your stories with the world.

Richard C Alexander Early Head Start Parent Scholarship

Every year OHSA awards a $2,000 scholarship to a parent of a child enrolled in Early Head Start. This award is named in honor of Richard C. (Dick) Alexander, business leader, and entrepreneur. Dick Alexander had a deep commitment to focusing resources where they can make the greatest difference: early childhood. He was the architect of the Ready for School campaign which leveraged the power of business and civic leaders to secure an additional $39 million in state funding for Oregon Head Start Pre-kindergarten's most vulnerable children. In 2010, his advocacy resulted in the Oregon Legislature allocating a million dollars to the Department of Education to establish a state-funded EHS program. This placed Oregon as a front-runner in developing a state and federally funded system for early childhood services, prenatal to age 5. We are happy to announce Tiffany Beal from Head Start of Lane County as the 2019 recipient of the Richard C Alexander Early Head Start Parent Scholarship.

Frank Roberts Memorial Scholarships

In addition to an illustrious teaching career, Frank Roberts served over 25 years as a member of the Oregon State Legislature, retiring in August 1993. Senator Roberts is remembered for his skilled service as a leader of the Education and Human Resources Subcommittees and was a leader in establishing state funding for the Oregon Head Start Pre-Kindergarten Program. His dedication to children and families, commitment to the disabled, advocacy for early childhood education and Head Start, and his unwavering commitment to education at every level made him a hero for thousands of Oregonians.

We remember Senator Roberts memory by annually awarding two $2,000 scholarships in his honor. The Frank Roberts Memorial Scholarship for Graduating High School Seniors is being awarded to Azusena Rosales Suares. The scholarship for Head Start parent is being awarded to Kaela Patterson of Mt Hood Community College Head Start.

Ken Lyday Memorial Staff Scholarship

Kenneth Lyday was a long-time Head Start teacher and a member of the Oregon, Region X, and National Head Start Association boards. He began teaching at Mt Hood Community College Head Start in 1992 and continued there until his passing in 2016. Ken's passion for Head Start was apparent to everyone who met him.

We are honored to continue Ken's legacy by awarding a $2,000 scholarship annually. We are happy to announce Emily Wallace from Neighborhood House as the 2019 recipient of the Ken Lyday Memorial Staff Scholarship.

Congratulations to the 2019 OHSA scholarship recipients!

For the past 20 years, the Bellingham Association of School Employees union known as BASE has been awarding scholarships to graduating seniors.

The scholarships have grown from one $300 scholarship to three $1,000 scholarships. Each year BASE members create and donate baskets to be raffled off. The proceeds go to supporting the scholarship fund.

"Members at each school and the District Office work together to create a basket and over the years it has become a friendly competition to create the 'best' basket," said BASE co-president and career/vocational guidance assistant, Connie Kelly.

Students apply for the scholarships and are selected by BASE members. Students must demonstrate academic achievement, have clear goals and a strong work ethic. Scholarship recipients and their families are invited to the annual BASE social where they are celebrated for their accomplishments.

"BASE employees work closely with students and are invested in their success," Kelly said. "We understand the importance of continuing education and hope our efforts may encourage students to pursue post-high school education which can change their lives."

This year's scholarship recipients were Options senior Jasmin Moreno and Bellingham seniors Alexander Bonesteele and Emilyn Garfias.
